Cheap White boards
Individual student size white boards are expensive. So here is a cheap substitute.

1. Go to your local building supply (Menards, Lowe's, Do-it Center, etc) and purchase a sheet of smooth white paneling for bathrooms.

2. Ask them to cut it for you into squares.

Can be used for a huge variety of things like.....

THINGS TO DO WITH WHITEBOARDS

·         Introduce concepts (Ex: Draw Electron transport pathway)

·         Review Vocab/Concepts (Give definitions and they must write the word )

·         Draw vocab words (Ex: Draw a chromosome and label the centromere & chromatids)

·         Draw atomic diagrams (How many electrons are in each energy level in a carbon atom?)

·         Draw mitosis phases

·         Draw and label body systems

·         Draw molecules (Ex: What does an amino acid look like?)

·         Draw biogeochemical cycles (Ex: water cycle, carbon cycle, etc)

·         Draw chemical pathways (Ex: ETC, Krebs cycle)

·         Compare and contrast

Draw a line down middle to divide board in half and write one word on each side
Ex: Tell two ways plant and animal cells are different

·         Practice sequencing (what comes next ?, put in order of increasing size)

·         Concept maps (Give them 5 vocab words and have them make connections)

·         Practice Punnett square crosses (Saves paper)

·         “Last 10 minute” check for understanding

·         Review for tests/quizzes (Stand up/Sit down/Show me the $)

·         Play Pictionary (Student draws and a partner guesses the word OR You draw and they guess)

GAMES
Stand up/Sit down
Each student has a whiteboard. Set kitchen timer (I usually use 3-5 min). Ask ?'s. Students write answers on their boards. Check answers. If they are correct they stand up; if they are incorrect they sit down.  Sitters can get back up on next ? if they answer correctly. Anyone standing when timer goes off gets a treat.

Show me the $
Class is divided into teams. (Left half vs right half; girls vs boys)
Each student has a whiteboard.  Ask ?'s. Students write answers on their boards. Ask them to SHOW YOU their boards . Count up # of correct answers. Team with most correct answers gets a point.

HINTS:

         Use Kleenex for erasers.
I give extra credit for bringing a box of Kleenex
