SD SCIENCE STANDARDS
for this CHAPTER
 NCLB Performance Descriptors South Dakota Science Standards

LIFE SCIENCE STANDARDS

Indicator 2: Analyze various patterns and products of natural and induced biological change.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level

Standard

Supporting Skills

(Synthesis)

9-12.L.2.2.  Students are able to describe how genetic recombination,  mutations, and natural selection lead to adaptations, evolution, extinction, or the emergence of new species.

Examples:  behavioral adaptations, environmental pressures, allele variations, bio-diversity

  • Use comparative anatomy to support evolutionary relationships.
  • Explain Darwin’s observations of population variation

·        Describe how genetic recombination, mutations, and natural selection lead to adaptations, evolution, extinction, or emergence of new species (Directional, stabilizing, disruptive

      selection, Genetic drift, Founder effect)

·        Use comparative anatomy to support evolutionary relationships
(homologous structures, embryology)

·        Predict the impact of genetic changes

      in populations (mutation, natural

      selection, artificial selection, gene

      shuffling)

NCLB Core High School Life Science Performance Descriptors

Advanced

High school students performing at the advanced level:

  • predict how traits are transmitted from parents to offspring;

Proficient

High school students performing at the proficient level:

  • explain how traits are transmitted from parents to offspring;
  • predict the impact of genetic changes in populations (mutation, natural selection and artificial selection, adaptation/extinction);
  • predict how life systems respond to changes in the environment;

Basic

High school students performing at the basic level:

  • identify DNA as the structure that carries the genetic code;
  • identify that genetic traits can be transmitted from parents to offspring;

2015
High School Life Science Standard (Grades 9-12)

HS-LS4-1 Communicate scientific information that common ancestry and biological evolution are supported by multiple lines of empirical evidence.

 Science & Engineering Practices:

8.  Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information

Disciplinary Core Idea Progressions:

DCI

Grades: 9-12

LS4.A Evidence of common ancestry & diversity

  Examining the passing of traits from parents to offspring, and across populations over time.  Communicate this information through multiple lines of empirical evidence.

 CCC patterns

2015
High School Life Science Standard (Grades 9-12)

HS-LS4-4 Construct and explanation based on evidence for how natural selection leads to adaptation of populations.

Science & Engineering Practices:

6.  Constructing Explanations & Designing Solutions

Disciplinary Core Idea Progressions:

DCI

Grades: 9-12

LS4.C Adaptation

Using statistical evidence and probability to explain the variation, distribution, and expression of traits over time in a population.  Providing evidence of the factors that drive this process, and how natural selection and changing environments lead to the adaptation, emergence, and extinction of populations.
